Routes into Languages Cymru, with its aim of supporting the uptake and visibility of modern languages, has developed a leaflet specifically targeted at school governors in order to enable them to conduct an open discussion in their school on the uptake of modern languages. Modern languages are facing challenges in many parts of Wales, with just 18% if 14 year old learners electing to study a language at GCSE in 2016-17. With the changing place of the UK in Europe and broader global development, the role of language learning and intercultural competency has never been more urgent for young people in Wales. While providing information on the current situation of MFL in schools in Wales, the guide also provides useful questions and recommendations for governors so that they can support their modern foreign language departments.
