Hello for the final time from Vienna – it’s going to be very hard to leave this beautiful place but soon it’ll be time to go home. So, for this final post, I’d like to talk about some characteristics of Austria.
Das wahrscheinlich auffälligste Merkmal ist die Sprache. In der Schule wird den Kindern Standarddeutsch beigebracht, aber es gibt einige typisch österreichische Wörter. Einige dieser Wörter habe ich sogar in meinen eigenen deutschen Wortschatz übernommen! Hier ist eine kleine Anleitung:
If something is disgusting in Vienna, you may hear ‘grindig’ instead of ‘ekelhaft’, and a pub would be ‘Beisl’ instead of ‘Kneipe’. Going shopping, you will need a ‘Sackerl’ instead of a ‘Tüte’ for a bag, and you may need to buy some potatoes, which are ‘Erdäpfel’ instead of ‘Kartoffeln’. Apricots are ‘Marillen’ instead of ‘Aprikosen’, and you may need some tomatoes which are ‘Paradeiser’ in Vienna instead of ‘Tomaten’. A snack is ‘Jausn’ instead of ‘Imbiss’.
Österreich hat auch viele Feiertage. Die meisten Arbeitsverträge in Österreich haben eine jährliche Urlaubsvergütung von ca. 5 Wochen und mindestens 14 gesetzliche Feiertage pro Jahr. Wenn einer dieser Feiertage auf einen Donnerstag fällt, können Sie normalerweise auch den Freitag frei nehmen. Es gibt sogenannte Swingtage. In Verbindung mit der zentralen Lage in Europa ist es sehr einfach, in verschiedene Länder zu reisen. Österreich wird von 8 verschiedenen Ländern begrenzt. Wenn Sie es vorziehen, gibt es in Österreich selbst viel zu tun! Mann kann die Landschaft erkunden oder sogar die schönen Sehenswürdigkeiten in Wien sehen. Wenn es warm ist, kann man sogar in der Donau schwimmen!
The Austrians also love dairy products! There are so many different types of cheese available, a lot of different chocolate, and of course Austria is very famous for their cakes served with cream. Mayonnaise is served on a lot of meals. This is due to the Austrian farming culture. They love cows and there is so much farmland and rural areas, just like you see in The Sound of Music!
Im Sommer kann man am Donauinselfest in Wien teilnehmen! Dies ist ein Musikfestival, an dem man kostenlos teilnehmen und das Sommermusik und deutschsprachige Musik feiert. Das Festival findet normalerweise jedes Jahr Ende Juni statt. In diesem Jahr war Revolverheld Headliner des Festivals. Hier ist ein Bild von ihnen beim Festival!
Finally, the Austrian national dress is still worn on special occasions! The dress is called ‘dirndl’ and the shorts are ‘lederhosen’, and together they are called ‘Trachten’. I have seen men on nights out wearing their lederhosen with pride! I bought my dirndl in a second-hand shop in Vienna for just one euro! And this hat was found at the Donauinselfest by my best friend while she was visiting me. I feel very authentic in my Austrian tracht!
