Botwm y Byd is a multi-disciplinary project, including a website, which provides online resources through the medium of Welsh for secondary school and university students studying Modern Languages, International Politics and Media.
Botwm yn Byd allows users to listen to roundups of main news items from around the globe and to discuss international affairs. In addition, there are blogs on fashion, films, bands and sport and all through the medium of Welsh. There’s also an opportunity for students to improve their language skills in French, German and Spanish through interactive exercises.
The website is divided into four sections:
Byd Bach (Small World) sees contributors providing roundups from news items in less than 10 minutes from various countries. In Pedwar Ban (Four Corners), four contributors, led by journalist Dylan Iorwerth, discuss main news items from around the world. Fy Myd i (My World) is home to the blog spot where voices from around the world comment on fashion, film and bands, bringing their international perspective to Welsh readers.
In addition, the Educational Resources section provides an opportunity to improve language skills in French, German and Spanish.
Subject specialists will use the content provided by contributors to provide educational resources that will promote a deeper understanding of international matters specifically for politics students, whilst media students will have an opportunity to develop their directing, producing and editing skills.
The project is led by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and is sponsored by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. Key partners include the Universities of Swansea, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff. The technical support is provided by Canolfan Peniarth, TSD’s publishing centre.
Dr Ioan Matthews, Chief Executive of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlathol said, “Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is delighted to fund this innovative and exciting project. The main aim of the Coleg is to increase, develop and expand opportunities for study through the medium of Welsh at universities in Wales and to collaborate with universities to develop effective collaborative partnerships. A cross institutional project which combines modern languages, media and politics is very original and an interesting idea and one which the Coleg is keen to support.”
Dr Mererid Hopwood, author and leader of the project, “It has been very exciting to see the website develop and grow. Hopefully, it will give us a chance to raise our heads to hear voices from around the world telling their story and that it will provide valuable resources for students through the medium of Welsh. There is much work still to be done, but a big thank you to everyone who has helped to open the window thus far”.
Mr Ceri Jones, Cilt Cymru, said: “Botwm y Byd is an original and exciting idea that is sure to motivate students to learn more about the culture of other countries, let alone to increase their understanding of current issues from around the world. It is possible to view events, be they political or factual, from many perspectives, and there are obvious dangers in an over-reliance on one source of information.
By considering the views of various countries and individuals, students have a chance to think, to question and to come to their own conclusions. Good luck to the new website and the drive to create mature and independent thinkers with an international attitude.”
