Newsletter – November 2016

Dear MFL colleague,

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on Routes Cymru activities for the next 18 months. We have successfully secured funding to enable the project to continue for the next 12-18 months. Our thanks go to Cardiff University, Bangor University, Aberystwyth University, Swansea University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, European Commission Wales, British Council Wales, CSC and EAS Consortia.

Routes Cymru has now devolved from its previous location in WJEC and is now operating out of 2 hub offices in Cardiff University and Bangor University. The staffing structure is as follows:

  • Professor Claire Gorrara – Academic Director
  • Kate Barber – Engagement and International Manager for School of Modern Languages, Cardiff University
  • Alison Hughes – Routes Cymru Project Coordinator (South Wales)
  • Ruben Chapela – Routes Cymru Project Coordinator (North Wales)

For contact details, please see our website.

We have many events and activities planned for this academic year. Please refer to our website for a full listing. However, we would like to draw your attention to some of our flagship events below:

Spelling Bee 2016/17

Registrations are now open here. Word lists have been reduced from 200 to 100 words to encourage greater participation. Here are the published words for Stage 1; see All Langs – Stage 1_Pob Iaith – Cyfnod 1.

Due to the transfer of IT systems from WJEC to Cardiff University we have experienced some technical issues. We will need to rebuild the Spelling Bee software which will take some time. We hope that the Spelling Bee software will be available soon for stage 1 of the competition – we will notify you by e-mail when this is the case. Please note supporting games will not be updated at this time. We are working hard to have all systems in place ready for Stage 2 of the competition.

The rules for the Spelling Bee Competition remain unchanged from last year. We are currently updating the teacher’s pack, but please use last year’s version for reference in the meantime.

In future, submission of winners’ names for each round will be via the web.

Adopt a Class and LingoMap

The Adopt a Class scheme was awarded the prestigious European Language Label back in 2012, and it has been an on-going success of Routes Cymru. This year, in order to reach a wider range of schools, the scheme will be changing into LingoMap, an interactive map showing pins of where some of our students are currently studying/working on their year abroad. They will be blogging about their experience periodically, by introducing relevant topics for the GCSE exam specifications.
