Routes into Languages Cymru and CILT Cymru joined forces on Stand 67 at skillswales/sgiliaucymru 2010 which was billed as the careers and skills event for Wales at the Millennium Centre Cardiff from 16 – 18 September 2010.
skillswales/sgiliaucymru forms part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to raise skill levels throughout Wales in order to increase national competitiveness and success in business; we were present on Stand 67 to promote competency in modern languages as a valuable skill in an increasingly globalised world.
Thursday and Friday saw a large influx of pupils and students from schools and colleges throughout Wales into the stadium and pupils flocked to the stand (encouraged by our sassy flamenco dancer no doubt!) to try out interactive language games on a touchscreen tv, to have a go at the map challenge to discover where in the world different languages are spoken and to talk to us about the opportunities for languages in the world of work. We were also joined by staff from the British Council and Ecotec who complemented our message about languages by offering advice to students on government funded opportunities to study or work abroad as an integral part of a degree course or as a job enrichment opportunity.
The event gave us the chance to talk to young people about their future aspirations and it was very encouraging to hear how so many of them were eager to continue with their language studies and to explore the exciting career opportunities open to them in the world of work.
