Whether you are trying to share the importance of learning languages with parents, researching careers available for people with language skills or looking for new activities to use in the classroom, we hope that these resources will provide you with the necessary support.

National Spelling Bee Competition?



The Spelling Bee Competition is designed to support students in year 7 who are studying French, German, Spanish and Welsh Second Language.  The resource includes alphabet activities in the target language, word games and spelling tests that aim to improve spelling, encourage correct pronunciation and most importantly to raise confidence levels.

Having a lovely time…wish you were here?

Here at Routes into Languages Cymru we are very keen for people of all ages to give languages a try. This is why we decided to develop a series of ‘Useful Phrases Postcards’. Currently in the series we have French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Japanese, which are all languages that you can study as a degree in Universities in Wales.
The images that we selected to represent these languages are vibrant and attractive. On the reverse, each card offers phrases such as Hello, Thank you and Can you help me? There is also a space for you to write any new words or phrases that you might learn if visiting the country.
The postcards have been very popular at all of our events and they have sparked many an interesting conversation. Quite often we ask children to think of as many countries where the postcard might be useful. We also used them as prompts for our ‘design your own bag’ activity.

Language Ambassadors

Routes into Languages Cymru has been scanning the country for linguists and have produced this set of ‘Language Ambassador Profiles’. These people use their languages every day in a wide range of jobs from International Relations to Corporate Banking. – Through the Collège au cinéma project the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC) has created a series of dossiers pédagogiques for over fifty films, including:  Le Grand Voyage.

Vocabulary, Grammar and Translation 
Hwb includes comprehensive resources designed to introduce, analyse and discuss general topic in the FrenchSpanish and German syllabus. The resources include vocabulary lists and further exercises to practise grammar points, translation skills and essay work.

– Amongst the materials available on the website of Cornerhouse, Manchester’s international centre for contemporary visual arts and independent film, are study guides to the following films:

-The website of the London Spanish Film Festival includes a link to Splash into Spanish, a set of language activities aimed at enhancing Spanish learners’ understanding of films shown at the festival (2009 and 2010) – see links at bottom of page.

– Tyneside Cinema offers a range of downloadable teaching resources.
– The website of the Instituto Cervantes in London includes a blogcontaining all the titles of the Spanish and Latin American films found in the institute’s library catalogue.



Thinking about languages at university? Here’s the guide for you!

Routes into Languages Cymru has produced a comprehensive guide for students and parents about the opportunities for language learning in universities in Wales.
This guide is designed to give you a better idea of what your options are so that you can make an informed decision about your future with languages. It offers you facts and figures about languages and business, examples of modules and course structures and information about the exciting year abroad. You can also read about the experiences of some students currently studying languages at university.
On the back page there are signposts to where you can find out even more information about studying languages in general and also the individual universities.
To accompany this resource, we have produced a set of notes for teachers that offer a range of ideas about how this resource can be used to inform pupils and raise the profile of languages within the school.

Following the launch and distribution of our new DVD resource, Learn a language, live abroad! Broaden your horizons, we have now uploaded the resource to our YouTube channel so that all of the interviews that feature on the DVD can be watched on the internet.

Go Global Enterprise Day

We’re very pleased to be able to launch our new resource, the ‘Go Global Enterprise Day’ pack. This brilliant new resource is designed to use alongside our board game ‘Go Global’, a copy of which was sent to all secondary schools in Wales last year. The pupils will work in groups and will be encouraged to put themselves in a “real” working environment, each taking on a specific role. Together they will design an international marketing plan and will end the day by presenting it to a panel of judges.
Use this resource to encourage your pupils to think Beyond Britain and to Go Global!




The Global Graduate


A new set of resources, authored by the Careers Department at Cardiff University and in partnership with Routes into Languages Cymru, have been developed to assist and encourage language students to sell their skills on their CV. There is a growing need for language skills in UK business and so these resources aim to ensure that graduates from Wales are better equipped and more aware when entering the world of work.


The first resource is a Sample Languages CV Format which shows how those studying languages or those who have language skills can present their skills and experiences on a CV in the most effective way possible.


The second resource is a Chronological CV. It shows an example graduate CV with hints and tips on how to tailor this to the individual.


With a greater call for ‘global graduates’ the resources also include Tips for the Year Abroad for Language Students which will give ideas on how to make the best of time spent abroad and to continue to build on the CV whilst studying.
