Barcelona is undeniably a beautiful city. It has a rich history, stunning architecture and charming streets. However, like any other city, it has its problems. The history, although rich, is turbulent. The architecture houses many struggling citizens.  And the streets provide a bed for the city’s homeless. It is important to understand the struggles facing society, so I will explain to you some of the issues which still trouble Barcelona.

However, overpopulation has forced too many people out of their homes and onto the streets. In quick walk through the city’s old town, I see homeless people of all walks of life. From diabetics to the elderly and immigrant mothers with children, it is estimated that each night 1500 will sleep on the streets. Thankfully, the Barcelona is trying to remedy this problem. Professionals social workers patrol the streets to try and help those in need. Although not a solution, the action taken has quelled the once rapid increase in homelessness.

Sadly though, those on the streets are not the only people who struggle. A high proportion of the city’s population live off less than 1000 euro per month. This has led to the emergence of several slums in the poorest areas of Barcelona. Here, multiple families are forced to live in single apartments, the infrastructure is crumbling, and opportunities are few.

Ultimately, Barcelona is a wonderful city to live in as a student. It has provided me with many opportunities I could not have experienced elsewhere. Unfortunately, many of the social issues are hidden from public view and it is all too easy to overlook those which are in the public eye. I believe that the first step to solving these problems is to acknowledge and respect them and hope that the higher powers in Barcelona do the same.
